Employment and Volunteer Opportunities

The I Choose Home Employment Project seeks to connect interested ICH participants with work and/or volunteer opportunities after they transition home.

Each participant between the ages of 18 and 64 who transitions out of a facility is surveyed to see if they are interested in working/volunteering. If the person expresses interest, a Peer Mentor (an individual with a disability him/herself who has significant experience with employment) visits them to help navigate all aspects of the process – from work readiness through securing employment. These Peer Mentors are also experts in helping our participants understand and maintain their benefits while working.

At the higher level, our ICH Employment Specialist builds bridges with potential employers and other state and private entities to expand work opportunities for our participants.  

NJ recently announced that it will use part of the MFP/ICHNJ savings to fund the New Jersey Career Transitional Education Program (NJCTEP). This program will provide free training and laptops to individuals who have been living in nursing homes or other institutions for long period of time and who want to move out and find employment. The program will help participants update their skills and become work ready as they prepare to leave the nursing home. View the press release here.
