Demanding Accountability from Nursing Home Owners
Laurie Facciarossa Brewer, New Jersey’s Long-Term Care Ombudsman, issued the following statement supporting the Office of the State Comptroller’s announcement that the owners of two South Jersey nursing homes are being suspended from the state Medicaid program:
"I greatly appreciate the Office of the State Comptroller’s ongoing efforts to weed out nursing home owners and operators who have demonstrated that they cannot be trusted with the vital task of caring for our older adults and others who require long-term care in New Jersey.
"We invest public dollars through Medicaid to ensure high-quality care and a better quality of life for residents, not to line private pockets. When individuals show time and time again that they will sacrifice the residents’ well-being for their own gain, they should not be able to do business here. And they especially should not be funded by our taxpayer dollars.
"Our staff will visit the two affected nursing homes this week and over the next several weeks to support the residents and ensure they are receiving the quality care and services they deserve.
"Anyone with concerns about care provided at these nursing homes should contact the Long-Term Care Ombudsman’s office at 1-877-582-6995."
The owners of these nursing homes were sued in June 2023 by the Attorney General for the state of New York, alleging financial fraud and resident neglect at four nursing homes in New York. Read more.
